Burns Suppers / Tributes
Jul 14th, 2008 by Mark Chesterfield
Robert Burns was born in the Ayrshire village of Alloway on 25th January 1759 and lived most of his life in this area until his death in 1796. In the 37 years of his life he left a great impression on Scottish society and, worldwide, is recognised as one of Scotlands greatest poet and hero.
He wrote his poetry and verses for the common man!
Life was never easy for Robert Burns. He grew up as the son to a poor tenant farmer and eventually became a farmer himself. He toiled on poor land and only just managed to put together a minimal existence of survival. He strived to become part of the affluent Edinburgh society where his written works were recognised and highly respected. Unfortunately, to his dismay, many rich and influential people claimed his works as their own, and Burns could never get established or famous. In the last 5 years of his life he became a infamous exciseman who had the job of collecting taxes from whisky production, and travelled hundreds of miles each week by horse back to collect this money from reluctant and angry debtors! He was a great romantic who appreciated woman in general and wrote emotional poems to show his affections!
Every January of each year, or any other time for that matter, we pay tribute to the man and his works. A celebration to his poetry and writings are acknowledged by “Burns Suppers” or simply a get together of people having a dram and a conversation!
Burns Suppers can be organised anytime in the year. Most tributes are done around Robert Burns birthday of 25th January.
